Growth ‘drowns-out’ efficiency gains. Environmental ‘tolerance
thresholds’ being pushed too far making a growing economy and a safe
climate incompatible according to new modelling from nef (the new economics foundation).
As economists and politicians
anticipate the publication of official figures for UK economic growth and the
World Economic Forum gathers at Davos, new research from independent think-tank
nef, warns that we should be wary
of celebrating rising GDP.
The report, Growth Isn’t Possible: Why rich nations need a new
economic direction, published today, Monday 25 January 2010, presents
evidence that endless economic growth isn’t possible when faced with the threat
of climate change and other critical environmental
boundaries.
A First Meeting for Bioregional Coordination (Español)
By Carlos Lopez Odgers. On Saturday, Jan 23 2010, a large group gathered in the beautiful natural environment, that gives us the Laguna Grande in the district of San Pedro de la Paz in the city of Concepción, Biobio, Chile.
Forming the circle on the grass, some in bare feet, we met, heard and talked of our projects, all had one thing in common, progress should be together, without losing the richness of individuality, but with clear objectives.
The first is to maintain contact, organize and generate a platform that allows networking and information sharing. The second step is to meet again in March this year and to share proposals (for each group) to generate consensus on the way forward. What do we want for this new collaboration?

John Michael Greer Summer 2010. Our resulting predicament can be stated
simply enough. The industrial world no longer has the resources or time
to change fast enough to a oide its own decline and fall. The U.S
government may be in a position to loan Wall Street $700 billion it
doesn´t have-in today´s economy, money is so close to a mass
hallucination that it´s not surprising to see it wished into being soi
casually-but resources such as fossil fuels, trained labor forces, and
time are not so flexible. In the shadow of these unmentionable
realities, the world is hurtling towards unwelcome future for which
most of us are hopelessly unprepared.

As we develop the Chilean branch of the Permaculture Research Institute, assiting people and communities to self organise for sustainability, we find ourselves working more and more in intensive design conversations. We are learning clearly that dreaming together is the first step, that by standing beside colleagues in conspiracy to design, we make sense together. Our consciousness is raised, and we can move on with a higher level of intention. What follows is a story from Enrique, participant in the a new community project Milenrama in the 5th region of Chile.
Anne Poelina is Managing Director of Madjulla Inc, an Indigenous community organization that offers consultation in cultural education, research, training and evaluation.
She holds a PhD in Indigenous Mental Health, as well as Masters degrees in Indigenous Social Policy, Education and Public Health and Tropical Medicine, and is currently pursuing her post-doctoral degree with Gaia University.
Poelina is deeply involved in the struggle for Indigenous rights in Australia. Her main projects at the moment are the development of sustainable, holistic models of Indigenous management and models for integrated land and water management.
Gaia University Associates Penny Livingston and James Stark are the founders of the Regenerative Design Institute
(RDI) in Bolinas, California. RDI has hosted a Gaia U orientation for
the last two years and is currently in development to become an
autonomous Regional Center in October of 2010.
Gaia University is thrilled to announce the launch of a new degree pathway offered in partnership with the City Repair Project
in Portland, Oregon. The City Repair pathway will be open to both
Masters and Bachelors Associates. City Repair members will serve as
specialist advisors for Associates, and will be intensively involved in
the first orientation for the program, which takes place in Portland in
May, 2010. The creation of the City Repair pathway is the first step in
the formation of an independent Portland-based Regional Center of Gaia
University.
