An Action Learning Event

Our main objective is to train and develop a team of educators and designers working on a network to Chile / sustainable planet through a high quality and and effective education for sustainability. We are seeking to buld teams capable of creating, designing and implementing "lifeboat" demonstration sites to serve as models to assist in building sustainable human settlements in homes, schools, workplaces and communities.

Immerse yourself in eco-design science of Permaculture. Essential to develop an understanding of the principles of natural systems and design needed to redesign human systems and societies.

Regenerative Design Capacity

This course is designed to support students and professionals to develop an Eco-literacy, an understanding of the basic principles of ecological and regenerative design, applying this knowledge to redesign human settlements and communities to learn to live in harmony and within the limits of nature.

This is a design course, whose main objective is to develop effective design capabilities through the practical application of knowledge and tools. Students work on real problems of current design permaculture projects (to be defined), supporting and guiding them to determine their own future. Students will have the opportunity to participate in the research, design and development of a local project. This is an opportunity to learn through participation in a process of applied design.

The course covers sustainable living systems for a wide variety of landscapes and climates. It includes the application of permaculture principles to food production, home design, construction, energy conservation and generation, and explores alternative economic structures and legal strategies supporting permaculture solutions.

This course is designed to help participant to develop their own ecological and particpatory language: a basic understanding of the principles of living systems, and their application in the eco social design  of resilient human communities.

Temas

Some themes we will explore:

  • Evidence of sistemic crises, ecological Evidence, Social and Economic, climate change and peak resource use.
  • Ethics & Principles of regenerative design.
  • Observation and Understanding from nature: principles of natural systems - soil, water, climate, biosphere.
  • Principles and applications of green design.
  • Water and Landscape: strategies for capturing and storing water, aquaculture, water harvesting, treatment and management.
  • Geology and soils: understanding the formation and composition of soil management techniques, recovery and control erosion.
  • Establishment of permaculture systems, orchards and greenhouses and horticultural organic, integrated management of animals, tree planting, agro-ecological management of pests and diseases.
  • Climate and microclimate: adapting to the place, eg. windproof design curtains.
  • Ecological Architecture, design and location of homes and resorts room.
  • Appropriate technology, renewable energy, etc..
  • Recycling and waste management.
  • Design and prev ention of disasters.
  • Design for Community: legal structures, alternative economic systems, dialogue techniques and decision making by consensus.
  • Designing regenerative projects.
  • Action leanring, Gaia University, peer to peer evaluation, accrediting experience etc. 
  • Global Permaculture Network.
  • Also: yoga, music, dance, laughing, videos, chat ... and a lot of work and group activities.

Accreditation

The Permaculture Design Certificate course is an internationally-recognized programme resulting in a Permaculture Design Certificate. It provides an introduction to permaculture design as set forth by Bill Mollison, reframed by David Holmgren, and modified by 7 years of teaching experience in New Zealand & Chile using a wide range of best practice from teachers around the world.

Be awarded a Certificate of Permaculture Design Course recognized; Permaculture Research Institute, and the Permaculture Institute of Chile. Students who complete the course can begin to design, advise and teach Permaculture anywhere in the world.

Through the Permaculture Diploma system graduates have the opportunity to be supported and guided to develop an action plan for lifelong action learning as part of a global network of educators and regenerative design professionals.

No previous experience required. Discover strategies for sustainable systems and a wide range of situations, climates and locations.

Based on a Sliding Scale dependent on your income and ability to pay.  E3 $354.000 E2 $460.000, E1 $565.000 (Chilean Pesos convert here).

Discount possible for couples. There are some scholarship available to low income. Price includes food, accomodation, materials and education. Course fees are due 21 days prior to the course start date (7 Octuber 2011).

Those who have a greater ability to pay contribute more, and subsidizing those with lower annual income. So if you make up to US$10,000 you pay the E3 price, US$20,000 the E2price, andif you make US$30,000 or more you pay full E1 price.

About the Teachers

The facilitation team from El Manzano are part of an interdisciplinary network of people from many sectors throughout Chile, who have come together to find solutions to the economic, environmental and social time in Latin America and the world.

Grifen Hope has extensive experience in natural resource management, and has designed and implemented various systems for intensive food production in New Zealand and Chile. An experienced educator of youth and adults, has facilitated many seminars, workshops and courses on the theory and practice of sustainable living. These include courses in Permaculture Design Certificate along with some of the most experienced teachers of permaculture design in the world (Joe Polaischer, Geoff Lawton, Darren Doherty, Robina McCurdy and many more). In these dark times, Grifen maintains a fundamental belief that all change, including large and powerful changes begin in simple conversations ... in design, the way we co-create our world.

Food & Accommodation

Food costs are included in your course fees. Food, coffee, tea, etc. is self-catered by students and is quite straightforward. San Pedro is located within walking distance of the teaching sites with many food options for a wide range of eating preferences. There is a major grocery store with fresh fruit and vegetables, dozens of fast-good places, several sit-down restaurants, and places to quickly grab coffee, pastries, etc.
