International Permaculture Conference Funding Appeal

Geoff Lawton, Permaculture Research Institute Australia

Geoff asks the international community for help to promote permaculture projects in Cuba, Africa and India at the International Permaculture Conference.

"This is a direct appeal for funding from participants from developing countries doing great work in areas of great need. They deserve to attend the International Permaculture Convergence in Jordan this year September 2011.

We will help them showcase their wonderful work with the rest of the world and learn from the international participants that are attenidng. We need funding, if you can help please donate, we will make sure these people get to state their case of their good work that should be showcased to the world.

We thank you and they will thank you more...lets get some funding together for these people."

Gathering the Chileno Institute of Permaculture: A Transition Community of Practice

17/09/2011 - 09:00
19/09/2011 - 17:00

A Caordic Institute Wakes to Itself

The Chileno Institute of Permaculture has been an experimental approach to the design of an Institute of Permaculture. From the beginning we set out to create a system based on the learning by error of the whole permaculture network worldwide.

The Chileno Permaculture experiment is not without roots. Chile has a long history, hidden by the Pinochet government and its shock doctrine, of cooperative efforts. The government of alliende was attempting to run the country as a cooperative of cooperatives in the 70's and with Stafford Beer onboard, was on the leading edge of comunications technology and participatory democracy.

As the permaculture community heads to Jordan, the Chileno example offers some hope of forms of organisation that can be both emergent and innovative, while ordered and formal.

Join us in September as we prepare for Cuba 2013 for deep insights into how to design for learning communities in the age of uncertainty.

Permaculture and Transition Towns on the move in Pucon Chile

A Modular Design Course

The first module of the permaculture design course in Pucon Chile went without a hitch, despite the clouds of ash. With 25 participants plus the team from Centro ARCA and Camina Sostenible in attendance we enjoyed the hospitality of the eco retreat of KodKod over a somewhat apocolyptic weekend.

Pucon (meaning "entrance of the cordillera") is an inspiring little community in the south of Chile with a total population of some 20,000, 13,000 of which are in the town itself. Pucon is Chiles latest Transition Town, not yet official, but certainly mulling, and now with a core group of leaders moving and shaking, is set to change the game in this part of the world.

The course itself is a first attempt by two permaculture design course graduates Jose Castro and Martin Araneda to establish themselves as teachers, to develop a local team,

Transition Town El Manzano Chile in the Permaculture News

Article in Revista Paula

20 km from Cabrero in the BíoBío Region of Chile is the first "transition town" in Latin America and the only one in Chile. It's called Villa El Manzano and is a tiny town that seeks to achieve ecological self reliance. Behind this project there are three brothers from Santiago who dream of changing the world.

Transition Town El Manzano builds Community Centre

Green Building & the Permaculture Master Plan in Chile

El Manzano sets out to build a campus of the great reskilling, implementing a permaculture master plan, and a summer of bioconstruction. So ends a cycle of change, and another cycle begins.

Since 2009 we have been working on the plans to make El Manzano a world class centre for sustainable education that equips people with the values, knowledge and skills needed to make the transition from an unsustainable growth culture to resilient human communities. As we begin to attract more and more visitors students and interns our facilities are often found to be lacking, and not of a quality befitting a green campus.

The Handmade House in El Manzano Chile

Building Local Resilience

The house of Miguel was almost finished this weekend, with a final layer of fine plaster going up. The windows are in, the doors are on their hinges, and Miguel almost the proud owner of a handmade house. Replete with frescoes on the wall, this little piece of art may be here in another century as a relic of our story, testament to the ethic of collaboration, of a local, national and international community coming together to help one man achieve his aspirations.

You can read another perspective about the workshop here 'good idea, good people, good place, good cause' in Arquitectura y Territoro by participant Elena Mayorga Marnich.
