An Education Revolution

Ken Robinson

Sir Ken Robinson presented his vision of a revolution in education. He tells us that every country in the world is redesigning their education systems. Ken asks the question, how we educate our children to take their place in the economies of the 21st century. How to do this when we do not know what the economy will be like next year?

A study shows that 98% of kindergarten children as evidence of genius level for creative thinking. At the time of leaving school this has been drastically reduced ... They have become educated.

The School Kills Creativity

Action Learning: University of Life

By Stella Estrega of Nodo Espiral

Action Learning is more or less the opposite of what we are taught in schools (colleges, universities, etc..) which is more academic learning. So it's a way to learn that - even though is a 'natural' way to learn for humans - for most people after 10 years with the other guy .. is a hard road re-learn it this way.

You have to do things ... with your hands, but first with your mind. It is NOT enough to just talk, or think: this is only part of the process. "Knowing is not enough, we must apply. Wanting is not enough to do." (Goethe, 1749 - 1832) Doing things provides critical new information, which in turn opens more doors to absorb more cognitive theoretical level, which in turn better inform practice ... rise in spirals so learning stages to more efficient models and complex experiments. Not to be confused with the dichotomy Practical / theoretical.

Like many dichotomies partenecen the old linear schemes, the new forms of systemic thinking, false dicotomías.La theoretical part is so important in the aprendizeje in action, as práctica.La academic and theoretical confusion is responsible for that this model of action learning has been malentendidoUno results observed in very caught up in the academic model (ie, most of us) is that it costs us much do or create real things to think of 'know enough' to start in practice. This would not be a big problem (we have lots of information) if it were not also see - in practice - in fact almost never 'feel' that we know enough.

Gaia University, School of Transition

Alive and Well in Chile

A few days out from the month long summer series of Gaia University in South America, with a chance to breathe, we reflect on a catalytic learning event that has brought together a learning community. The presence of two international leaders in the world of regenerative design Liora Adler and Andrew Langford has made this project tangible, as we move from dreaming to planning a critical mass now exists.

Orientation

We started the seven day orientation with a bang with 37 participants in attendance from 27 from Chile, and ten from Peru, Venezuela, Brazil, New Zealand, Spain, Canada and the USA. A mulitcultural and multilingual event from the beginning, not without its difficulties. The event was led by Liora and Andrew with teching support from Gaia Uni associates Grifen Hope, Javiera Carrion and Monica Engel.

The first few days we were privileged to witness the end of year presentations of Fran, Berni, Santiago, Pedro and Felipe from Ecolof, and a final ending presentation from Juan Carlos as he graduated from his two year diploma process. The level of action from these guys is incredible, mobilising their families and communities to engage in transition. Each associate demonstrated a high level of competence in their respective projects, and in particular compelling stories about their own personal transformations. We were also lucky enough to see the final end of year presnetation from Monica Engel, Grifen & Javiera.

Action Learning

Action Learning

“Knowledge without wisdom is a pile of books on the back of an ass” (Japanese proverb). And wisdom, we believe here at Gaia University, comes from a combination of hands-on engagement with people and projects in all their messy realities, inspired mentoring from fellow actionists, deep self-reflection and critical thinking. This combination of interpenetrating catalysts for learning and growth is rarely found in the conventional Academy and is usually deferred for 'real life', something that comes later.

construction projectWhile this deferred-life model may suit stable cultures with time on their hands and a tendency to extend infantilization to young adulthood it is inappropriate, even dangerous, for living on planet Eaarth.

What does the New Teaching / Learning Paradigm look like?

spiral roof

Modeling the processes of experiential and discovery learning, you will learn the basic systems, tools and philosophy of a new learning paradigm as the basis of the Diploma system, as well as models for global and integrative thinking.

''Learning is change, is sustainability. Learning about learning about learning'' Sterling

Transformative Action Learning

Have you ever pondered what the new teaching and learning paradigm might look like, or what kind of learning experiences are transformative, what kind of institutions are equipping the leaders of today and tomorrow, or how we 'teach' for sustainbility literacy?

During the workshop we will seek to answer these questions and many more.

The Great Reskilling in Slow Town El Manzano

It has been said that we are the most useless generation that ever walked the earth (Hopkins, 2008). Our cosy western lifestyles have led us to reliance on the supermarket, and food transported thousands of kilometres around the planet. As we have chased economic growth at all costs, we have rejected a lifestyle where we had to take care of our own needs, and many of the basic skills that go along with resilient simple living. We forgot once common knowledge, common sense, like how to cook and preserve, to grow our own food, build our own homes, how to fix things when they break, how to live in community.
